How Much Is My Rent Portion?
Participants on the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program generally pay 30% of their income in rent, and Minneapolis Public Housing Authority subsidizes the remainder of the rent amount. Because the portion of the rent covered by MPHA is different depending on each individual participant’s income, it cannot be estimated in general how much of the rent MPHA will pay. For details of our rent calculation policies, please see our Administrative Plan on the Policy Page.
Please refer back to the Rent Burden Worksheet in your briefing packet if you are a Minneapolis Section 8 HCV Participant who has recently moved and you have questions regarding how much your new rent portion. At the time of your briefing, Section 8 HCV provided a Rent Burden Worksheet in which we assisted calculating your estimated rent portion. You need to pay this estimated rent portion to your owner.

Section 8 HCV will notify both you and your landlord in writing of your actual tenant portion and the Section 8 HCV portion of the rent. The actual portions may not be determined immediately. It may take up to 45 days until you receive the written notice. Pay the owner the estimated amount in the meantime. You may be due a refund or you may owe the landlord some additional rent money.
The estimate is based on the information you have provided. The actual amounts will be based on the verification of your income.
